Speech perception with implant
Poor consonant recognition
Can understand speech in quiet environments
Notes:
Ito, Takagi, Kawano, Takahashi & Honjo (1995) - greater improvement in speech production occured in postlingual, then in prelingual & children
Vowel recognition was good
Consonant recognition was inadequate
Most could understand speech without lip-reading in a quiet environment
Hearing ability was reduced in noisy environments or while listening to TV or music
Prelingual adults and children needed a longer rehabilitation period then did postlingual
Cooperation of medical personnel, family, teachers and therapists was essential
Overall, patients reported being satisfied with implants
